Recently-extended Bills EDGE Greg Rousseau spent some time on Cover 1's Film Room breaking down tape, and he was asked to look back on the AFC Championship Game which the Bills lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Kansas City Chiefs. In doing so, he was asked in particular about Kansas City's ability to break contain and get to the edge on some key play action plays, and Rousseau answered with great transparency and accountability about his own play and his role on the defense.
Rousseau started by explaining that Kansas City was using a heavy set with an up back, typically a fullback, and that they began using the formation earlier in the season when the Chiefs visited Buffalo. When they dialed up that play, they seemingly handed it off to the back on a dive inside every time.
Speaking about how the Kansas City Chiefs changed their plan in the AFC Championship Game, Rousseau pointed out a difference.
"Off of that, with extra information, they started running the boot," Rousseau said. "So the offense, you know, they kind of got you where they want you to, thinking run, then boom, they run a boot."
"I know I could have adjusted to it better, personally, but at the same time, I'm not the type to try to guess plays," he added.
The Chiefs gave the edges a ton of problems in that game, with those bootleg plays giving the Bills' defense fits. In Bobby Babich's first season as a defensive coordinator, there was plenty for him to learn from and to make adjustments going forward. We'll see how the Bills defense responds in similar situations next season.
