The Buffalo Bills have a superstar at quarterback in Josh Allen. Ever since he was drafted, he defied the odds to become one of the best at his position — and one of the best players in the league.

With the national spotlight shining so brightly on him, of course, he will have his fair share of critics. Perhaps the biggest is none other than co-host of “First Things First,” Nick Wright.

Allen, after years of ridicule from Wright, appeared on the show. The topic of Wright’s animosity toward Allen came up in the form of an old cartoon in the Buffalo News, where Allen could be seen grabbing Wright from the ankles and shaking him upside down with the words “turnover machine” etched behind both of them.

To no one’s surprise, Allen took the high ground while also dropping perhaps the best quote he’s ever had as quarterback of the Bills.

“I like to think of it as, I’m good at my job if 31 other fan bases do not like me,” Allen said. “For you guys, I don’t know. If I was in your position, I would hope everybody would like me. But I think you’re going to have 50/50 people that don’t like you to people that do like you.”

Wright’s shtick is hilarious, and it works well. Anytime he brings up the Buffalo Bills or Josh Allen, he gets views on his show for going against the grain and tearing into the franchise quarterback. Most of the time, it’s completely unwarranted and nonsensical arguments to just drive more engagement.

Throughout Allen’s career, Wright has called him a “turnover machine” and ultimately diminished his accomplishments. Almost always, pointing to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as being the better all-around player, with Allen falling behind him.

Josh Allen doesn’t take the bait while appearing on ‘First Things First’

The interview began with the aforementioned Buffalo News cartoon, which hilariously showed Wright in the same outfit he was wearing during the current interview. Allen, poking fun at Wright, began with an obvious question, all while donning his signature smile.

“Oh, is that Nick?” Allen asked.

Wright quickly responded with a much different tone than he’s had in years past when talking about the quarterback. Putting everything aside, he just simply wanted to know Allen’s thoughts on one of the most important questions of the day.

“Here’s an awkward question, but I’ll just ask it. If you’re aware of any of our show or anything I’ve done. Do you think I’m unfair to you?” Wright asked.

Allen, once again, took the high road. The franchise quarterback is an MVP on and off the field, and his response was further proof. You won’t get him that easy with a softball question like that. The reigning MVP fully understands every word can be a headline.

Media literacy is important, and Allen absolutely nailed the interview

“I don’t think so,” Allen said. “I think you guys do such a great job. I think some of these bits where you guys are coming in on stretchers, looking like me on my crutches the other day at the press conference. But listen, we understand, right? The media is kind of what makes this thing go. You guys get people talking and having these conversations.”

Allen didn’t take the bait, didn’t settle scores, and didn’t need to defend a resume that already speaks for itself. He understood the moment, tipped his cap to the media machine, and managed to subtly remind everyone that if people are arguing about you nonstop, you’re probably doing something right.

Wright’s critiques will keep coming, the debates will rage on, and the hot takes will continue to fly from the machine. As long as Allen keeps stacking wins, MVPs, and unforgettable moments while donning a Bills jersey, the noise will stay exactly where it belongs. Judging by that smile, Allen wouldn’t have it any other way.
