The Buffalo Bills have been battling injuries throughout training camp and preseason, and have come out of it relatively unscathed. Yes, Maxwell Hairston is going to miss time, and players like Cole Bishop missed important reps, but both will play an important role in the defense. Unfortunately, former third-round pick DeWayne Carter has torn his Achilles and will miss the entire 2025 campaign. Right before the season began, they lost some important depth. Carter cracked the 53-man roster in a busy defensive line group, from both edge and interior players, and was poised to rotate in and hopefully make a difference.

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens are coming into Western New York looking to avenge their postseason loss to the Bills. Being down a man on either side of the football just made things a little harder for Buffalo. Carter, while not a game-changer, provided depth at the position. Hoping for a speedy recovery and to see him back on the field in 2026. This puts even more pressure on the team’s recent-rookie additions in Deone Walker and T.J. Sanders to make an impact early and often.

DeWayne Carter was a force in college

Carter was a 2024 third-round pick coming out of Duke. Through 52 games with the Blue Devils, Carter amassed 127 total tackles (49 solo, 78 assisted) with 26 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 11 passes defensed with four fumble recoveries, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Throughout his collegiate career, he was the program’s first three-time captain, three-time All-ACC recipient, and a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy in 2023, while earning All-America honors and being a two-time Academic All-ACC selection. He was a student of the game and ferocious on the field in college.

Since joining the Bills, he’s been limited on the field. A wrist injury in late October 2024 sidelined him for the last five games. Even when he was on the field, his performance had been inconsistent. Heading into his second season after making the initial 53-man roster, Carter was hoping to take an important step in his game and contribute in a larger role for the defense. Throughout his 2024 NFL season, he had 14 tackles (11 solo, three assisted), one pass defended, and five tackles for loss. Pro Football Focus recorded Carter taking 315 snaps (152 in rush defense, 162 in pass defense, one in coverage) while adding eight total pressures (five QB hurries, three hits) for an overall PFF grade of 41.4 on defense. His rush defense earned him a 40.1 grade, and his tackling a 40.4.

The last thing you want to be is down a man, regardless of position, before the season can even begin. With the team’s first official injury report slated for Wednesday, here’s hoping we get some good news about Tre’Davious White and his availability for Sept. 7. Some good news would be nice right about now.
