It certainly feels like the Carolina Panthers are going to place the franchise tag on star edge rusher Brian Burns before the looming March 5 deadline.
But what happens beyond that is anyone's guess.
The most likely scenario is that Carolina places the franchise tag on Burns and tries to negotiate an extension before the deadline in July.
Another potential scenario is that Carolina tags Burns and then trades him (a la the Green Bay Packers and Davante Adams a couple of years ago).
If the Panthers decide to trade Burns, they likely wouldn't receive the same offer that they received from the Los Angeles Rams in 2022 (two future first round picks and a second round pick).
Instead, the return would probably be a bit lighter. A veteran front office executive told The Athletic this week that he believes teams would be willing to give up one first round pick in a trade package for Burns.
There's just no way the Panthers should make that move if that's the return. The odds of drafting a player that can make the same impact as Burns are incredibly low. First round picks are obviously valuable, but they're also a major gamble.
The Panthers have a franchise edge rusher in Burns. Plenty of NFL teams would love to have a player like Burns on their roster. If Carolina is serious about getting things turned around under new head coach Dave Canales and new general manager Dan Morgan, then Burns needs to stick around around in Charlotte. The former Florida State star needs to be part of the answer for the Panthers as the franchise enters a new era.
