After deliberation, the Carolina Panthers announced Monday evening the hire of Dan Morgan as the team's next general manager.
Morgan was the team's assistant general manager for the past three seasons. He is replacing Scott Fitterer, who was fired after a 2-15 2023 season.
"Dan has a thorough knowledge of our football personnel and a clear vision to take us where we all want to go," Panthers owner David Tepper said. "We know he will attack this opportunity with the same intensity he did as a Panthers player."
Who is Dan Morgan?
Morgan was drafted by the Panthers in 2001. He played seven seasons with the franchise. He is currently ranked 10th in tackles for the franchise.
He also showed up in the biggest moments in franchise history. Morgan had a game-record 25 tackles in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
He now takes over a franchise desperate for success. It won't be an easy rebuild and retooling. The Panthers lack a first-round selection in the 2024 NFL draft. There are several contracts he will have to answer for, namely Pro Bowl-caliber outside linebacker Brian Burns.
It also is concerning that Morgan is a friend and assistant of Fitterer, who failed to build a winning roster in his tenure as the lead shotcaller.
His hire could spell more of the same, in Tepper only looking to hire people who will assuage his ego.
For now, Morgan sets his sights on the head coaching search the Panthers are seeing through. There are 12 candidates currently up for the position, and the Panthers are moving to a second round of interviews with a handful of them.
Morgan has played a role in the first round of interviews. Now, he has the power to hire a football mind to fit his vision for the team and roster moving forward.
Panthers appear one step closer to naming the team’s next GM
Following a busy week and a half for the Carolina Panthers, the search for the next general manager appears to be shaping up.
