When the Carolina Panthers traded what became the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft for Bryce Young, the NFL world laughed.
However, Panthers general manager Dan Morgan doesn't see not having a first-round pick as necessarily a bad thing.
Carolina's first selection will come at pick No. 33, and Morgan on Tuesday explained that the team believes it can add elite talent at that slot – contrary to popular belief.
"No matter how many picks we have, we're looking to add impact players at every position," Morgan said Tuesday. "We want to build depth, we want to build competition on this roster. But the 33rd pick, that doesn't mean that we can't do that. All options are on the table."
Though the Panthers would like to have a top selection in the 2024 draft, that isn't how reality works. Yet, in a way, it worked out.
The Panthers plan to stick with Bryce Young. If Carolina had the No. 1 selection, there would be visible controversy over whether the franchise planned to draft the nearly guaranteed first pick in Caleb Williams.
Carolina gets to avoid that mess and allow Young to build his confidence.
The top need for the Panthers is adding an elite wide receiver. That can still be done early in the second round, proving Morgan's point.
Carolina doesn't need a first-round pick to find first-round talent.
Panthers tipped their hand at the wide receiver they think can help Bryce Young the most
Dan Morgan and Dave Canales may have tipped their hand regarding the wide receiver they want to pair with quarterback Bryce Young in the 2024 NFL season.
