The Chicago Bears will soon be forced to make a decision regarding the quarterback position and the team's current starter Justin Fields.
Fields has started to make things more complicated for the Bears upcoming decision with his improved play over the final few weeks of the 2023 season.
The Bears current starter is gaining more and more public supporters by the day and might have just received the biggest show of support from a former Pro Bowl quarterback.
While appearing on SiriusXM NFL Radio, former NFL quarterback Alex Smith was asked about the Bears starting quarterback's progression in the league and shared his support for the young quarterback's future.
"We can dive into the numbers on Justin Fields in his career, but you also have to take into account the instability this guy's played through," Smith said. "Multiple head coaches, multiple offenses, a turnstile of an offensive line, and this is the first year with DJ Moore he's actually had a number one wide receiver. Given that instability, when you look at his play and who he's playing with these last couple years, I think there's an argument to be made that this guy's ceiling is unbelievable."
Fields has put together a solid 2023 campaign and it couldn't have come at a better time. The Bears are armed with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft for the second consecutive season and are potentially toying with the idea of selecting a new franchise quarterback with the top pick.
In response, Fields has thrown for 2,414 passing yards, rushed for another 630 yards, with 20 total touchdowns and 13 giveaways. Since returning from injury in Week 11, Fields has led the Bears to a 4-2 record alongside improved defensive play.
Fields best asset has been his dual threat ability both throwing and running the football. Fields currently leads the Bears on the ground in rushing yards, and will do so for the second consecutive season.
"I really do think he's in a separate category," Smith added. "There's a lot of guys who we say are dual threat and fall into that category, this guy is different. He has different kind of strength and ability with his legs."
Smith even went a step further and compared Fields' play making abilities to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, who is currently the favorite to win his second career MVP award.
"Look at Lamar and what he's done this year, and again he's going to win the MVP deservingly, not just based off his raw numbers but his affect on the game. I think you put Justin Fields in that kind of box," Smith said. "I think he can become that. He's that level of runner and thrower. If you go put Justin Fields in a great situation with great players around him, this guy's going to flourish."
The Bears have the option to either select a new quarterback with the top pick in the draft or trade back for the second consecutive season in hopes of acquiring more assets to build around Fields as the starter, an option Smith believes the Bears should strongly consider.
Fields will have one final game in Week 18 to stake his claim and it couldn’t come against a better opponent. The Bears are 0-5 against the Green Bay Packers with Fields as the starter and now is his opportunity to cement his affirmation as the team's franchise quarterback, according to NFL Network's Kyle Brandt.
"I think this is a bigger game for the Chicago Bears than the Green Bay Packers," Brandt said on Good Morning Football. "The Packers win and they make the playoffs. Chicago wins, it determines their next few years. [If Fields] goes up there and loses again, how can the Bears keep [him]? But if [he] goes and burns Lambeau down, how can they not?"
Fields seemingly has all of the support behind him heading into Week 18 and we'll see how he performs in what could either be his final game with the Bears or the first of many games to go as the Bears unquestionable franchise quarterback.
