While speaking to reporters one day before the Chicago Bears select Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the top ranked quarterback prospect might have thrown a wrench into the team's draft plans.
Williams was asked ahead of the draft who he'd like to see the Bears draft with their second selection in the first round and offered a surprising answer.
Williams listed Penn State left tackle Olu Fashanu has his ideal selection because he knows Fashanu would "put his life on the line" for him.
Leading up to draft day, it seemed like a two-way race between which prospect will be the Bears second pick of the draft between Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze and Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II.
Now, one might have to consider the wishes of the team's next franchise quarterback into the decision, who seemingly wants to reunite with a former friend.
Williams and Fashanu played together in high school with Fashanu serving as his left tackle before the two parted ways in college. Could the two reunite in Chicago?
Earlier in the draft process, when Bears general manager Ryan Poles was asked about which direction the team is leaning with the ninth overall pick, Poles listed wide receiver, defensive line, and offensive tackle specifically. Which makes sense considering the final three prospects in consideration fill those three positions.
Williams also mentioned that if the Bears don't pursue Fashanu, he would also like to see the Bears go after one of the three top wide receivers to give him another top weapon in the passing game.
Odunze comes first to mind considering who will be available by the time the Bears are back on the clock and the fact that Williams, Odunze, DJ Moore, and Keenan Allen have already worked out together ahead of the draft.
"[Caleb] is trying to have a tremendous wide receiver core, which he'll already have," Odunze said ahead of the draft while on the Rich Eisen Show. "[We've] definitely been in talks a little bit just seeing where I'll end up, but I'd definitely be a fan of that."
The decision with the Bears second pick in the first round seems like it will ultimately come down to pleasing their new quarterback with either an offensive tackle / wide receiver or pleasing head coach Matt Eberflus with a top ranked defensive lineman. We're just mere hours away from seeing what the Bears' decision will be.
