Bears QB Caleb Williams offered a candid assessment of his personal performance despite the team’s win over the Steelers
He knows he can get better.
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had a rollercoaster of a game in Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, filled with a disaster play, some big-time moments, and way too many throws he’d wish to have back. But the result worked out in the Bears’ favor once again.
All in all, the numbers show another strong game by the team’s starting quarterback. Williams finished 19-of-35 passing with 239 yards and three touchdowns with a 104.3 passer rating. You can certainly be much worse than that.
Yet, when reflecting on his performance after the game, Williams made sure to hold himself accountable for the way the offense played, and could have played.
Caleb Williams had honest performance review for his play in Week 12 win
“You don’t apologize, but you do understand where you can be as a team and what we could have done out there,” Williams told reporters after the game. “That’s the frustrating part. It starts with me, and then it funnels down to everybody else. I’m missing a few passes, and a couple passes recently that I’ve been surgical with, and missed those passes today. It was frustrating, but trying to stay positive for the guys. Just knowing what kind of game it’s going to be.”
It was another win in which the Bears ideally would have liked to put their opponent away earlier than they did, but it’s something Williams and head coach Ben Johnson continue to say: You don’t apologize for winning in this league.
Wins like these are even better and similar to the kind of wins the Bears have been stringing along the last two months. You get the “W” in the win column, but you also have a clear idea of where to improve going into the next game.
“We’re an 8-3 team in the National Football League. We feel good with where we are at,” Williams added. “But, we do got to get better. We don’t feel like we’re the same ole Bears. We pull through for each other when it matters most. We gotta keep getting better, like I said. It starts with me on my side, and we’ll keep growing from there.”
Williams’ worst play of the game came in the second quarter after getting corralled in the end zone and eventually losing the football, resulting in a defensive touchdown for Pittsburgh. He also had a few misses all over the field, whether it was a deep ball or throwing behind a shallow cross.
His accuracy is still a concern for this offense, but Williams recognizes it and holds himself accountable. Yet, it was still a 31-point outing for the offense in a game in which the run game struggled to get going efficiently.
There are things to clean up with a short week ahead. Let’s enjoy the fact that the Bears are 8-3 on the season and see what kind of corrections Williams and Johnson can diagnose for the next game.
