Caleb Williams just added gasoline to the Maxx Crosby pipedream after making his pitch for why he should come to the Bears
The Chicago Bears can reach a totally different level if they can get Caleb Williams and Maxx Crosby together.
We warned you that the name Maxx Crosby was going to be heavily discussed over the next few weeks as the Chicago Bears, and the rest of the league, approach the active period of the offseason.
A Maxx Crosby trade is atop the wish list of every NFL team this offseason. He continues to be mentioned as a top option for the Bears to bring in to help take the team to the next level as a true Super Bowl contender and get the most out of quarterback Caleb Williams’ rookie window.
Fittingly, Crosby and Williams sat down together during an interview posted on Crosby’s podcast “The Rush” and that interview shows why these two would be perfect together in Chicago and Williams took the opportunity to hype up what the Bears are building.
Caleb Williams makes subtle pitch to entice Maxx Crosby into coming to Chicago
“I can’t not credit to anybody but [head coach Ben Johnson] and his staff,” Williams said when asked by Crosby what changed from Year 1 to Year 2 with the Bears. “The control they had of the situation, the belief and confidence that they had in themselves, but they also sacrificed to get this thing going. Ben got hired, and then they went to work immediately.”
Coaching certainly played a major role in the Bears’ turnaround this past season and it was shown with Johnson finishing as a finalist for AP Coach of the Year. That kind of coaching is something Crosby frankly hasn’t experienced much since entering the league.
“When you got a good coach, and a coach that has that much confidence in himself and his staff, it goes a long way for the players,” Williams added.
For a player like Crosby, with an uncertain future and going on his essentially his sixth head coach entering his eighth season, hearing that shows him what he’s missing being with the Raiders. It goes beyond coaching as well that sparked the Bears’ turnaround and Crosby was aware of that from afar.
“Things like that matter,” Crosby told Williams. “They invested, we’re bringing in Ben Johnson – he’s an offensive mind – in Detroit we had Penei Sewell, we had Taylor Decker, we had a great line. This is what we need to do, we need to protect our asset, let’s give him the good O-line and let’s get him some more weapons. And you see what happens. That’s what a good organization does, it’s like ‘here is the plan, this is how we’re going to do it and we stick to it.’”
Caleb Williams is just as big of a selling point for anyone coming to Chicago, and Crosby is a huge fan
Don’t get me wrong, having the right coach in place is important but so is having the right quarterback in place. The Bears are one of the few lucky teams that have both, and have young guys in those spots to work together for years to come. That’s appealing for any player on the outside.
Throughout that interview, you could see the mutual respect Williams and Crosby had for each other and Crosby’s final words of the interview carry some serious weight over the next few weeks.
“You’re one of those guys for sure and you’re just getting started,” Crosby said of Williams. “I don’t even know you understand yet how good you can be and that’s the scariest part. You know we’re locked in forever. You need me, hit me at any time.”
It’s clear Crosby is a fan of what the Bears are building and doing to build around their superstar quarterback. What the Bears need now is a superstar on defense to really get this team over the hump to win a Super Bowl, and a player such as Crosby would be the ideal option.
First, Crosby would have to be willing to leave Las Vegas and request a trade, then it’s up to the Bears to send a competitive offer to bring him to Chicago. It’s still a pipedream, but QB1 did a great job selling how things are done in Chicago these days.
