There were plenty of headlines made out at Bears minicamp on Tuesday afternoon. However, one storyline made news for the wrong reasons as head coach Matt Eberflus gave a disappointing injury update on Chase Claypool.
It’s important to note that Claypool hasn’t practiced since the first week of voluntary OTAs, which is not a good sign for a player in desperate need of a productive 2023 campaign.
As far as what is keeping Claypool off of the practice field, Eberflus wouldn’t dive into much detail.
“Just a few minor things he’s working with,” Eberflus said, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “He’s not in a time crunch.”
While it doesn’t appear to be anything too serious, Claypool’s absence is absolutely notable. After all, this is a player who the Bears acquired for a second-round pick in the middle of the 2022 season.
After arriving in Chicago, Claypool failed to make his presence known. He played in seven games with the Bears registering just 14 catches for 140 yards. That’s not exactly the early returns general manager Ryan Poles was hoping to see on his investment.
If Claypool is to miss any time in training camp, then this becomes a critical concern for Chicago. The Bears bolstered its wide receiver room by adding D.J. Moore this offseason. But Justin Fields will need Claypool to be available in order for the offense to maximize the passing game.
