It's anyone's guess what the Chicago Bears' offense will look like on Sunday under new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown after parting ways with Shane Waldron.
During his introductory press conference on Wednesday after being promoted, Brown laid out a hint on what the offense could look like and head coach Matt Eberflus had a firm idea on what he's looking to see from his new play-caller.
Based on Brown's background and his comments on Wednesday, his new offense could be a major boost for tight end Cole Kmet.
The Bears' highly-paid tight end has fallen out of the game plan during the team's three game losing streak and it's not the first time this season he's been heavily under-utilized within the offense.
During that three game stretch, Kmet had a combined five targets for three receptions and 27 yards. That's inexcusable usage from one of your top weapons on offense. Under Brown, that should change going forward.
According to NFL Media's Steve Wyche, Brown's background as a running back coach and a tight end coach with the Los Angeles Rams leads him to believe that the unit will "run more through the running back and tight end Cole Kmet."
That should be music to Kmet's ears and it makes sense when you look at the unit's most successful outings of the season thus far.
During the Bears' three-game win streak from Weeks 4-6, Kmet saw 12 targets that he turned into 11 receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns. I mean, it's not rocket science here, when you get this guy the ball, good things happen for your offense.
During the nine games with Brown serving as the primary play-caller for the Carolina Panthers in 2023, tight ends Tommy Tremble (59 yards on six targets vs Green Bay in Week 15) and Hayden Hurts (54 yards on four targets vs Indianapolis in Week 9) had their best statistical games of the season.
Kmet is a much better pass-catcher and weapon than those two players and will surely be a focal point for this offense going forward while the offense also leans more heavily on the run game with D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson.
Matt Eberflus sends a firm message on what he wants to see from the offense with Thomas Brown as the new coordinator
The unit will be looking a lot different.
