Colston Loveland’s injury outlook gets a minor boost after leaving early in Week 3 win based on latest update
Bears get some good news regarding the rookie TE.
As big as the Week 3 win was for the Chicago Bears over the Dallas Cowboys to finally get a “W” in the win column for head coach Ben Johnson, not everything went perfect on Sunday.
The Bears still have a few areas to clean up before going up against some higher level teams later in the season and the offense had one big injury happen early in the game.
First-round rookie tight end Colston Loveland left the game early on Sunday and did not return due to a hip injury. After the game, head coach Ben Johnson’s only update was that the team will see how it looks on Monday. Well, now we got an actual update via ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Colston Loveland will have “a chance” to play in Week 4 against Raiders
Saying Loveland can make it back on the field in time for Sunday game in Las Vegas, it would be a nice boost to add back to an offense that finally got things figured out and fired on all cylinders against the Cowboys.
While the tight end position struggled to find any production during the first two weeks, Johnson said the lack of usage was on him and would change in Week 3. Prior to his injury, Loveland was targeted three times in the loss, hauling in his only reception for a big 31-yard gain.
Loveland left the game after playing a total of six offensive snaps, which is a shame because that one reception was only the start of what he could have put together in that game. In the meantime, veteran tight end Cole Kmet found his way into the end zone for his first score of the season on a 10-yard pass that happened to be his only target of the game.
The wide receiver position is really what took off for the Bears yet again with DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, and Luther Burden III all scoring a touchdown and accounting for nearly 200 yards of total offense as a trio.
Being able to fully unlock the tight end position for this offense is once again going to be a goal for this coaching staff heading into Week 4 and having Loveland on the field will be a big part of that. If Loveland can’t go, expect to see the unit lean into more 3/4 WR sets to give more opportunities to players like Burden and maybe even Olamide Zaccheaus.
