The Chicago Bears made a bit of a stunner in the first-round of the 2025 NFL Draft by selecting Michigan tight end Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick.

Who the top tight end of the class was between Loveland and Tyler Warren seemed to be up to interpretation and the Bears did ample work to lock in this selection.

At the end of the day, the Bears choose Loveland as their guy, giving quarterback Caleb Williams a highly athletic, QB-friendly target who can attack on all three levels.

Soon after the selection was made official on Thursday night, Loveland was asked about his new quarterback and he already seems to be fired up about joining forces with Williams in Chicago for years to come.

"Stud. I love his game, just watching him throughout college. He's that man and I'm super excited," Loveland said. "The arm talent on him, super smart, does everything the right way from what I can tell. So, I'm super excited. He gave me a call a little bit ago, so we're looking to build that bond and just get with him and help the Bears win."

Pairing Loveland with fellow tight end Cole Kmet gives Williams two security blankets over the middle and two additional blockers in the run game. Few play-callers called more 2-TE sets in 2023 than Bears head coach Ben Johnson.

As the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, Johnson's top TE threat was Sam LaPorta. Loveland shared that Johnson sees some of the same qualities in his new TE.

"That's what [Ben Johnson] told me after the meeting," Loveland explained. "They asked me who my favorite tight ends to watch were, and I put Sam LaPorta in there."

As for when the Bears zeroed in on making Loveland their guy, that seemed to be during the team's trip to Ann Arbor for the Michigan Pro Day. In attendance for the event from the Bears were Johnson, general manager Ryan Poles and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

At the end of the day, this was a Ben Johnson selection all day long. He's got to be stoked about what Loveland can add to this offense and the aid he can bring to Williams in the passing game.
