The Chicago Bears learned on Tuesday morning that they won't have a chance to sign a major free agent that would've been a great fit for the historic franchise.

One of the Bears' biggest needs this offseason is at defensive tackle.

Justin Jones is the only defensive tackle with extensive NFL experience returning in 2023 which makes that position a key need for Chicago.

One of the best options that was expected to be available in free agency was Daron Payne.

But unfortunately for the Bears (and numerous other teams), Payne isn't going to hit free agency.

The Washington Commanders announced on Tuesday morning that they're placing the franchise tag on Payne.

Payne is the first player to receive the franchise tag this offseason.

While Payne likely would've been the best option for the Bears, there are still some other quality defensive tackles that will be available in free agency.

Fletcher Cox, Javon Hargrave, and Dalvin Tomlinson are among the top remaining options that are slated to be free agents when the new league year begins in March.

One factor for the Bears when it comes to signing a defensive tackle is the 2023 NFL Draft. Chicago will have to make a decision on signing a premier defensive tackle before the draft. If the Bears sign someone like Cox, it could mean they'll select an edge rusher (Will Anderson) instead of a defensive tackle (Jalen Carter) with their first-round pick (depending on whether or not the Bears trade the No. 1 overall pick).

Chicago still has plenty of options with Payne off the board.
