It’s the correct decision to make.

The Chicago Bears are getting set to take on the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and will be short-handed on the defensive side of the ball again, one week after giving up 52 points.

Following Friday’s practice, the Bears have released the final injury report for Week 3, with five players officially listed as out and two others listed as questionable going into the weekend.

Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson is the big one, who suffered a new groin injury in Week 2 that will keep him out indefinitely. Head coach Ben Johnson shared on Friday that Johnson has received a few different opinions on his injury, but no full decision on surgery has been determined.

In the meantime, starting linebacker T.J. Edwards and nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon will again not be suiting up due to hamstring injuries. Edwards did play in Week 2 but left the game early, Gordon has missed each of the previous two games.

On offense, running back D’Andre Swift will be questionable going into the weekend with a quad injury. The Bears have been exclusively using Swift for the bulk of the carries through two games, regardless of his final status, one would expect Kyle Monangai or Roschon Johnson to get more involved against the Cowboys.

For some good news, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett got cleared to play after missing practice on Wednesday and ramping back up the last two days while dealing with a knee injury.

Bears made the right call with T.J. Edwards and Kyler Gordon

In Week 2, the Bears felt forced to play cornerback Jaylon Johnson and Edwards against the Detroit Lions, and both players ended up leaving the game early. Head coach Ben Johnson noted both players reaggravated their existing injuries, but we found out Johnson actually suffered a new, and more severe injury by trying to play in that game.

“I wouldn’t say there was any rushing involved. I would say there was a sense of urgency to get back but definitely no rush,” Johnson explained. “I didn’t do anything reckless. I felt comfortable playing. I know if I didn’t feel comfortable, I wouldn’t have played no matter what anybody was saying.”

Regardless of if he was rushed back or not, Johnson playing that soon after injury led to an even worse injury that could end up forcing him to miss the rest of the season. I’m on record saying this is the best path for Edwards and Gordon considering they both are dealing with hamstring injuries, and it should look the same next week against the Las Vegas Raiders to allow both players time to fully recover coming out of the bye week in Week 6.

In a game that could turn into a shootout, it’ll suck not having Edwards and Gordon out there. But, it’ll suck even more if either player suffered a similar fate Johnson is going through.
