The Chicago Bears will spend most of the 2023 offseason reshuffling its roster with new talent acquired via the draft and free agency. The influx of new personnel is certainly enough to pique fans interest, but it could be in the Bears’ best interest to re-sign one of its most valuable members of the 2022 squad.

Bears running back David Montgomery is set to enter free agency for the first time in his career. Montgomery was a valuable member on the field and in the locker room for Chicago’s young group.

Montgomery makes for a difficult decision for Bears general manager Ryan Poles. He’s an above average running back that has proven to capable of ripping off 1,000-yard season. However, paying running backs a hefty chunk of money is not a popular strategy in today’s game.

He has accumulated 3,609 rushing yards and 30 total touchdowns in his four seasons with Chicago. As fans saw at times in 2022, Montgomery is the perfect backfield compliment to QB Justin Fields.

Poles addressed Montgomery’s situation at the NFL’s Scouting Combine on Tuesday.

“My feelings for David haven’t changed. So we’re gonna go through this process and just gather information and have conversations, and see what happens.”

Just last month Poles stated that he’d like to keep Montgomery in the building if he could. Spotrac currently lists the 25-year-old running back’s market value to be in the $7 million range annually.

Poles has plenty of massive decisions looming. Re-signing Montgomery soon after the new league year officially begins on March 15 would help alleviate some of the pressure heading into the draft while also retaining a major team need.
