The Chicago Bears have announced the long-awaited addition to the team's defensive coaching staff.
The team has hired former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Phil Snow as a defensive analyst, according to head coach Matt Eberflus.
Eberflus met with the media at the start of the week on Monday and addressed the decision that was made to the coaching staff. Eberflus also provided injury updates for key starters, including quarterback Justin Fields who left the game on Sunday.
Snow will be joining the Bears defensive staff in advanced scouting role and will not be on the sidelines during game days for the team, according to Eberflus.
"What [Snow] will be doing is our advanced scouting," Eberflus said. "We'll be doing advanced scouting for our defensive staff. He will be giving summaries of all the situations during the course of the week. And he'll be here in the building the entire week."
The team's head coach has alluded to brining in a senior defensive mind to the staff to help alleviate the pressure and disconnect that has been accruing after defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned in Week 3.
Snow, the 67-year-old, Snow recently served as the defensive coordinator with the Panthers from 2020-22 under head coach Matt Rhule and also served as a defensive assistant for the Detroit Lions.
Snow has previous college experience at Boise State, Cal, Arizona State, UCLA, Washington, Eastern Michigan, Temple and Baylor in his coaching career.
Eberflus mentioned that he has made previous connections with Snow in the past and is confident and comfortable with adding his expertise to the staff.
"[Snow's] a great person, he's very humble," he said. "He works well with others. He gives sound advice, and he's done a good job where he's been in terms of having good defenses."
Eberflus added that the two share similar defensive scheme philosophies but is excited about Snow bring his unique college experiences to the table as well.
The Bears defense has struggled all season long, but seemed to have turned the corner in Week 6. Maybe the additional voice in the room can help keep the unit on the right track going forward throughout the remainder of the season.
Justin Fields will be doubtful for Week 7 with dislocated thumb
