Bears’ latest injury news just handed WR Luther Burden III the golden opportunity to make his bold offseason statement come true
He’s going to make the Green Bay Packers pay on Sunday.
The Chicago Bears dropped some significant injury news going into the weekend when the team ruled out wide receiver Rome Odunze ahead of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers with a foot injury after not practicing all week.
It’s a major blow to the team’s passing attack, that was publicly criticized by head coach Ben Johnson earlier in the week. Odunze leads the Bears in nearly every major receiving statistic this season but the team’s arsenal of weapons at the wide receiver and tight end positions can make up for the loss.
The onus is really on wide receiver DJ Moore to step up and prove why he’s the team’s highest-paid offensive weapon but the opportunity for rookie Luther Burden III in the No. 2 role is even greater, especially for this specific matchup against the Packers.
Luther Burden III can look to make the Packers pay on Sunday for 2025 NFL Draft decision
When the Bears selected Burden in the second-round of the 2025 NFL Draft, it was clearly a luxury pick. Burden didn’t have any pre-draft attention from Chicago and the Bears were stunned to still see his name on the board with the 39th overall pick.
It was a no-brainer decision for the Bears to make, ending Burden’s slide as the sixth wide receiver to come off the board. It was something Burden make sure he wouldn’t forget.
“All I need is me to believe in myself,” Burden said back in May. “I don’t need everybody else to believe in me. As long as I believe in myself, I’m going to handle business. That’s staying with me forever. Everybody who passed up on me gotta pay.”
While all 32 teams technically fall into that category, it’s more important to look at the teams who chose to select a wide receiver in the first-round and early second-round over Burden, that includes the Green Bay Packers after selecting Matthew Golden with the N0. 23 pick.
This is the kind of game Burden has been manifesting and it couldn’t come at a better time following the injury news with Odunze. Burden’s been making steady progress developing in this offense and earning more and more trust, now he gets to pay everything off with his biggest opportunity ahead.
Looking at the stats alone, Burden’s already coming into this matchup with the upper hand compared to who the Packers opted to select by having more yards, receptions, and touchdowns than Golden this season entering Week 14.
But, it’s worth noting Golden has missed three games this season and was listed as questionable going into the weekend with a wrist injury. He’ll have some extra motivation to show up and produce as well on Sunday, we’ll see if it happens and what kind of statement Burden is able to send.
