The Chicago Bears put up another dud of a performance against the San Francisco 49ers dropping their seventh straight game and ninth loss of the season, despite making a second coaching change heading into this week.
It's clear now that there are multiple issues on this team beyond the coaching staff and one of the major ones reared it's ugly head again on Sunday.
The offensive line of the Bears' has been a major disappointment this entire season, that's not something that's new either. Every week, the unit is heavily outmatched and allowing their rookie quarterback to get absolutely demolished.
On Sunday, Caleb Williams was sacked seven different times, the fifth game this season where Williams was sack 5+ times. After this latest lost, the Bears' rookie quarterback is easily the most sacked QB in the league with 56 sacks taken.
Not all of it has been on the offensive line, considering Williams is up there in allowed sacks among QBs. However, too many times the Bears' offensive linemen are getting beat in one-on-one matchups or on stunts/twists.
The worst part about the sacks is when they were showing up. On Sunday against the 49ers, of the seven sacks allowed, five were on third down. That includes two sacks allowed on third down during the two of the first three offensive drives for the Bears.
These sacks are killing all of the momentum on offense and throwing away any of the offensive gameplans heading into Sunday. It's hard to do anything when you're consistently moving backwards behind the sticks.
Williams is now on pace to finish the season with 73 sacks, which would be the most sacks taken by a rookie quarterback since David Carr was sacked 76 times in 2002.
That's a record Williams and the Bears would like to avoid, and if they break it, it falls solely on general manager Ryan Poles and the front office.
The Bears tried to address the obvious quarterback protection issue by bringing in multiple offensive linemen, including two new starters going into this season. Yet, the main issue still clearly remains and it's holding everything on the team back.
And, it's not a problem that's going to be fixed any time soon. But, it's definitely the biggest issue the front office needs to actually address heading into next season.
