The Chicago Bears received some unfortunate news on Friday as head coach Matt Eberflus revealed that back-up quarterback Trevor Siemian is undergoing a season-ending oblique surgery.

Siemian started in place of the injured Justin Fields in last week’s loss to the New York Jets. He suffered the injury in warmups, but ultimately played through the pain.

Siemian deserves credit for gutting it out with an injury that severely impacts a quarterback’s throwing motion. Just last week Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers left the game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a similar injury.

With Siemian heading to the shelf, Nathan Peterman will serve as Fields backup. Chicago also announced the signing of Tim Boyle off of the Detroit Lions’ practice squad earlier in the week.

Boyle went 0-3 in three starts for the Lions last season, throwing three touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s expected to fill in behind Peterman as the team prepares for its showdown with the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
