The Chicago Bears, and quite frankly the entire NFC North, received some major news on Monday when the Green Bay Packers announced they intend to release Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander.
Alexander was offered a revised, incentive-heavy, deal for the 2025 season to play with the Packers but turned down the offer. Barring any last minute trade, the 28-year-old will hit the free agent market for the first time in his career.
As one of the top cornerbacks in the league, having Alexander out of Green Bay is big for the other three teams in the division, and the wide receivers who would have been in line to face him twice in 2025 will benefit greatly.
One of those wide receivers is Chicago Bears second-round rookie Luther Burden III, who had the best social media response to the news replying to the official NFL post on Instagram by commenting "Uh oh" in a sarcastic manner.
Now, the reason why Alexander was ultimately released comes down to his lack of availability. Since 2021, Alexander has only appeared in just 34 games. Last season, Alexander played just 10 snaps against the Bears in Week 11 before missing the rest of the season due to injury.
With DJ Moore and Rome Odunze on offense, Burden might not have gotten much one-on-one attention from Alexander if he remained in Green Bay, but it's still a big blow to the Packers having to make this decision, but one they were prepared for.
Given his hit-or-miss availability, the Packers are used to life without their former top cornerback. Nothing drastically will change for the team not having him in 2025 because they barely had him to begin with in 2024 and still ranked 15th in passing yards allowed on defense.
Even still, Burden isn't the first Bears' wide receiver to call out the Packers' secondary. Last offseason, Moore said he wasn't worried about the secondary additions made by the other three teams in the division, Packers included. A slight that Packers safety Xavier McKinney took personally.
Moore still got the last laugh totaling 148 yards and a touchdown across two games against the Packers, including the Week 18 win to close out the season. So, just mark Burden down as another person in Chicago throwing offseason shots at the Packers.
Between Moore, Odunze, and now Burden joining the offense, the Bears will have some tough weapons for opposing defenses to handle and the Packers are only making things harder on themselves with the result of this situation.
But, at the same time, Burden better hope he didn't react too soon when it comes to Alexander leaving because the soon-to-be free agent could very easily stay in the division and sign with someone like the Minnesota Vikings.
