The Chicago Bears keep running the same ole script and continue to get the same results, but in the greatest way possible.

The Bears, for three quarters, looked like a team that didn’t belong on the field with the opposing team and yet, when it mattered most, this team rose to the occasion on the brightest stage.

Despite trailing by 18 points at halftime, the Bears continued digging and finished the game with a, 31-27, win over the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the NFC playoffs.

Issues are impossible to ignore, but the result is something the Bears will continue to take

Somehow, the Bears continue to play unsustainable football and continue to ride sustainable wins into the divisional round. Early in this game, it seemed like this would be a rout when the Packers jumped out to a, 21-3, lead in the first half.

The defense, per usual, allowed big play after big play and couldn’t get a stop in the red zone. The unit was getting out-played in man coverage and couldn’t get enough pressure on quarterback Jordan Love to stop him from picking the unit apart. As a result, head coach Ben Johnson couldn’t trust the defense and kept resorting to fourth down attempts on offense that couldn’t be converted.

It was sloppy, and downright embarrassing to watch. But, something changed at halftime and it wasn’t what the Bears were doing schematically. The stubborn approach remained the same from Johnson and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and the players finally started to execute when it mattered most to hold the Packers at bay and mount the comeback.

Bears once again can go back to the drawing board to fix the lingering issues

When Johnson and the players meet with the media in a few moments, I can guarantee they won’t be pleased with the performance in this game, despite getting the win and advancing to the next round.

The reason why is because this team continues squeaking by while dealing with the same exact issues. Call it luck or determination, it’s the reality.

I’d like to say these slow starts can’t be sustained and will eventually come back to bite this team if it’s not cleaned up. But, outcomes like that prove it can be sustained, to an extent. If the Bears want to keep this run alive, something’s gotta give early in these games and who knows if it ever will, or if it’s even needed the way this team plays when it counts most.
