Justin Fields has been a lightning rod early on in the offseason after showing steady progress in his second season as a starter. However, one of the NFL’s rising stars has been at the center of trade rumors as the Chicago Bears continue to weigh their options with the No. 1 overall pick.

It should be noted that general manager Ryan Poles committed to Fields in January. Poles also said that he would have to be “blown away” by a prospect to draft a quarterback with the first overall pick.

While there aren’t any guarantees in professional sports, one legendary quarterback, who shared similarities with Fields during hi splaying days has weighed in. Current Fox Sports analyst, and former four-time Pro Bowler, Michael Vick believes that it’s time to start putting pieces around Fields.

I think he’s a great player,” Vick said on Marquee Sports Network. “I think Justin has a lot of room to grow. As a quarterback and in general, but growing in the passing game. Another year in the system. Some weapons around you.”

“You should be looking to build around him now.”

Rushing to the Record Books

Behind a porous offensive line, Fields managed to snap a couple of Vick’s record in 2022. Fields eclipsed Vick’s 1,039 single-season rushing yards set in 2006. Unfortunately, Fields was held out of Week 18 or else he could have topped Lamar Jackson’s single season rushing record for a quarterback.

In a Week 9 loss to the Miami Dolphins, Fields ran for a record-breaking 178 yards, snapping Vick’s single-game rushing record by a quarterback.

Ultimately, Poles and the Bears’ front office have plenty of resources to get Fields the help he needs in order to take the next step in his development. The 2023 offseason will be a pivotal period for Fields and the Bears get back to competing for a postseason berth.
