Every offseason, NFL front offices and coaching staffs have to have uncomfortable conversations and make difficult decisions when assessing the current state of the roster and how the team intends to improve that roster moving into the next season.

For the Chicago Bears, there’s already a handful of in-house dilemmas the front office and coaches will have to start weighing going into the final five weeks of the regular season.

The biggest one making a lot of noise right now involves cornerback Nahshon Wright, easily the team’s most surprising player of the season, who’s latest accolade continues to drive up his value.

Nahshon Wright named NFC Defensive Player of the Month

With the calendar moving into December, the NFL announced the players of the month from the month of November for each conference. Wright was named as the NFC Defensive Player of the Month after recording three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and six pass deflections during the team’s five games played in November.

It’s a well-deserved honor for the player everyone seems to be talking about the last few weeks and it’s not just the last month. Wright has played some stellar football all season long as a starter for the Bears’ defense and currently leads the NFL in takeaways entering Week 14.

And it’s not going to be his only recognition either. Wright currently ranks second among all cornerbacks in Pro Bowl voting (trailing Carolina Panthers’ cornerback Jaycee Horn). It’s been quite the season for the player even Chicago didn’t imagine having this much of an impact.

During the offseason the Bears brought Wright in on a one-year, $1.1 million contract to reunite with defensive backs coach Al Harris and add some depth to the cornerback room. After Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson suffered his initial groin injury before training camp, Wright leaped at the opportunity in front of him and never looked back, starting 11 of the team’s 12 games this season.

Wright’s performance in 2025 has created quite the dilemma for the Bears’ front office

It’s been clear Wright has found his home within this defensive scheme and his impact goes well beyond the takeaways he’s recorded throughout the season. He’s been impressive against the run and hurting opposing quarterbacks when they try to test him down the field.

Ideally, you’d like to keep those kinds of players in the building, but it’s not that simple for Chicago. The Bears already have two highly-paid cornerbacks locked up in Johnson and Kyler Gordon. You can make the argument that something could be worked out with Wright, but the Bears are already deep at the position looking ahead to 2026 to justify giving him a solid contract as CB3 at best.

The Bears have Tyrique Stevenson on his rookie contract for another season, along with Terell Smith, who’s been out for the season with a knee injury suffered before the season. Then, you have to factor in rookie fifth-round pick Zah Frazier, who’s been on the NFI list all season while he deals with a personal matter, but he’s someone the front office and coaching staff still have high hopes for.

That’s not even factoring in the safety position. Kevin Byard, who leads the NFL in interceptions, and Jaquan Brisker are each playing out the 2025 season on expiring contracts. The same goes for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who has fit in nicely with the team culture after joining the defense mid-season.

There’s a lot of moving parts in this secondary and not a lot of money to go around. It’s easy to see how Wright, despite his stellar season, could be the odd man out. But, another team will surely move quick to sign him if he walks out the door to see if he can replicate this kind of success again.
