The Chicago Bears have finally entered into the offseason that will be filled with multiple franchise altering decisions needed to be made over the coming weeks.

As is stands, the belief is that Bears head coach Matt Eberflus will be retained for the 2024 season but the jury is still out on quarterback Justin Fields with the Bears in current possession of the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

No matter what happens at the quarterback position in Chicago over the next few weeks, the Bears first need to make a change with the offensive scheme. With current offensive coordinator Luke Getsy not expected to return next season, here's some intriguing offensive coordinator candidates the Bears could explore.

Frank Reich

The former Carolina Panthers head coach isn't the most appealing option considering he's been fired midseason as a head coach during each of the last two seasons. There's also concern whether or not Reich will even be interested in returning after noting "this is probably the final chapter of my NFL journey," when speaking with The Charlotte Observer following his removal as the Panthers head coach.

However, maybe Reich will be interested in returning at a position with less stakes than being the top man in the room. Reich hasn’t been solely just an offensive coordinator since 2017 when he helped lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a miraculous Super Bowl run. The following season, Reich was hired as the Indianapolis Colts head coach and brought along Eberflus as his defensive coordinator.

The two veteran coaches have a lot of history and connection together. A reunion in Chicago could be exactly what both coaches are looking for. Reich can take the passenger seat while having full control of the offense. Eberflus can gain a trusted and experienced voice on his coaching staff during what will be a critical third season as the Bears head coach.

Darrell Bevell

As the Bears start to consider the possibility of an offensive coordinator search, the ideal candidate needs to show two distinct qualities: experience and success with a young quarterback. Whether it's the top rookie in the 2024 Draft class or if it's Fields, the Bears offense needs someone who can lead a young quarterback.

Darrell Bevell could be the ideal candidate to check off both of those boxes. Bevell has 23 years of NFL coaching experience including 15 seasons of being an offensive coordinator with various teams. Bevell has worked alongside quarterbacks such as Hall of Famer Brett Favre in Green Bay and Minnesota, Russell Wilson during his first years in Seattle, Matthew Stafford during his final two years in Detroit, Trevor Lawrence during his rookie season in Jacksonville, and most recently with Tua Tagovailoa in Miami.

The Dolphins current quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator has spent the last two seasons on Mike McDaniels' staff that has shredded opposing defenses. Tagovailoa has looked like a totally different quarterback and has been playing at a Top-5 level since the new regime took over.

Who's to say that kind of turn around couldn’t happen for Fields? Or even having a rookie quarterback take the league by storm in Year 1 once again? The 54-year-old will also bring years of experience to the offensive staff that has clearly needed it over the past two seasons. He's an interesting name to watch over the next few weeks.

Klint Kubiak

Another candidate with loads of experience working with various types of quarterbacks would be Klint Kubiak. The oldest son of Super Bowl winning head coach Gary Kubiak as started to make a name for himself among league circles.

Kubiak now has 10 years of NFL coaching experience under his belt and has proven to be ready for a top offensive job once again. The former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator in 2021 helped lead Kirk Cousins to a 33 touchdown, 7 interception season while Justin Jefferson torched the league in route to a career-high 10 touchdowns with 1,616 yards.

The young 36-year-old offensive coach spent the 2022 season as the Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator with Russell Wilson. It was a down year for the entire team as a whole but Kubiak bounced back in 2023 as the San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator.

Working alongside Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers offense helped produce five Pro Bowlers this season, including second year quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy was the most efficient and effective quarterbacks in the entire league. After spending a year under Shanahan's wing, perhaps Kubiak is ready to call his own offense again.

Long-shot Candidate: Brian Johnson

It's not that common to see an offensive coordinator for a successful team jump ship to a lesser team at the same position. However, it has been done before, most notably when Eric Bieniemy joined the Washington Commanders after leaving the Kansas City Chiefs.

On paper, Brian Johnson has done very well in his first season as the Eagles offensive coordinator. However, those in and around the building believe he hasn't lived up to the high expectations set by former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen in 2022.

Philadelphia is a toxic fanbase and the fans are surely unhappy with the regression of their offense despite putting together another playoff season. It's highly unlikely but if Johnson were to be ousted as the Eagles offensive coordinator, the Bears will need to be quick on the hunt to add him.

Johnson helped lead Jalen Hurts to insanely productive numbers as a passer and a rusher in 2023. He can bring his skillset to Chicago and utilize it around Fields or a potentially dual-threat rookie like Caleb Williams. The experience he's gained in such a short amount of time is highly valuable and sought after if he becomes available.
