The first name to potentially replace Declan Doyle has been revealed and he already has a close tie with Bears HC Ben Johnson
The Bears have requested to interview Connor Senger for their offensive coordinator position.
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson got some bad news late last week when his right-head man, offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, jumped ship for greener pastures.
Doyle was hired in a lateral move to become the new offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens under newly-hired head coach Jesse Minter. With the opportunity to be the primary play-caller for an offense featuring Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry, it was a no-brainer decision.
But, the loss of Doyle leaves a massive void on Johnson’s staff going into his second season with the Bears and the hunt is on to find his replacement. And one name has already surfaced as an option.
Bears request to interview Connor Senger for offensive coordinator position
With Johnson being the primary offensive play-caller in Chicago, it limits the amount of potential candidates interested in the position but also helps Johnson narrow down the ideal candidate for the role on his staff. The first name the Bears requested to interview was Arizona Cardinals pass game specialist Connor Senger.
Senger fits everything Johnson is looking for in his next offensive coordinator. He’s young (30-years-old), he’s a former quarterback, and he’s a rising candidate in the coaching world. Senger already had interest for a QB coach position with the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers last weekend.
He spent four seasons with the Cardinals learning and developing under offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, who was a groomsmen in Ben Johnson’s wedding and recently hired as the offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions under head coach Dan Campbell.
As close as Johnson and Petzing are, you can bet the interest in Senger came with a strong recommendation but his work in assisting with the Cardinals passing game speaks for itself.
Arizona ranked seventh in passing yards per game and seventh in passing touchdowns with backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett starting the majority of the season in place of an injured Kyler Murray. With Brissett under center, the Cardinals passing attack was exciting to watch, although it helped that the team was routinely trailing and forced to throw on a weekly basis.
Offensive coordinator would be a big jump for Senger but one he’s ready for, especially this kind of offensive coordinator role. Senger also got recent experience calling plays at this year’s East-West Shrine Bowl. He’s a strong first name to have in consideration to replace Doyle.
