The Chicago Bears rematch against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night will have a much different feel to than it did 13 days before, despite both teams still battling it out for the NFC North title going into the final stretch.

While the Bears took care of business Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, the Packers suffered much more than a loss in Denver. Green Bay lost multiple players due to injury and the biggest one was losing star pass rusher Micah Parsons for the season with a torn ACL.

Parsons alone is a major loss that greatly impacts the remainder of the season for the Packers, well beyond the upcoming game this weekend at Soldier Field. As for Chicago, the Bears were on the opposite end of the injury news on the defensive side of the ball with the latest roster move.

Bears open the 21-day practice window for LB Tremaine Edmunds

On Monday, the Bears announced that linebacker Tremaine Edmunds will be back on the practice field, four weeks after being placed on the injured reserve with a groin injury suffered against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11.

Edmunds was in the midst of a Pro Bowl season for the Bears and a real standout on the defense. Even despite missing four games, Edmunds is the team-leader with 89 tackles this season and his four interceptions ranks third among all linebackers.

Throughout the season, the Bears had been cautious with players returning from the injured reserve and rightfully so considering the setbacks suffered by standout players in Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, and Rome Odunze. Yet, in Edmunds’ case, it always seemed like he would be on the shorter end of the 21-day practice window, meaning he could be back in action as soon as Saturday.

If that’s the case, it’ll be a big addition to the unit and give defensive coordinator Dennis Allen some added flexibility at the position having both his starters finally back on the field together.

It’ll be great to have Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards back together down the stretch

Due to various injuries this season, the Bears starting linebacker duo of Edmunds and T.J. Edwards have only played together for a total of four games this season (Weeks 6-9 after the bye week). Far from the ideal situation for both players and the defense as a whole.

The first full game Edmunds and Edwards played together came in Week 6 against the Washington Commanders, a game in which Edmunds totaled 12 tackles and Edwards totaled nine tackles. Both players were flying around the ball and showed out on the road.

“I can’t say enough good things about T.J. Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds and their ability to fill those gaps in a hurry,” Bears head coach Ben Johnson said after that game. “I thought those two played a really strong game (that) night as well.”

However, it was a short-lived experience when Edwards suffered a setback with his hamstring injury along with suffering a broken hand plus the groin injury with Edmunds.

The Bears had multiple players step up in a big way over the last few weeks including D’Marco Jackson, who’s really impressed the last few weeks. Whether it’s on Saturday or later, the Bears will be thrilled to have Edmunds and Edwards back on the field together in the second level.
