No one likes running into an ex after a breakup, especially when you run into each other soon after said breakup with a new partner by your side.

That's something the Chicago Bears and former head coach Matt Eberflus are going to have to experience during the upcoming 2025 season.

According to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, Eberflus has officially been hired as the new defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. The pairing was expected to happen for days and after meeting with various candidates, the Cowboys decided to bring back the familiar face.

Eberflus will be returning to Dallas, where he previously served as a the Cowboys' linebackers coach from 2011-2017 under then head coach Jason Garrett. In 2018, Eberflus left to become the defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts and became the Bears' head coach in 2022.

The interesting thing about this hire is that the Bears and Cowboys will be facing off in Dallas next season. That means we will see Chicago's new head coach Ben Johnson and his innovative offensive scheme going head-to-head against Eberflus' defense.

We don't know quite yet when this matchup will be taking place but it should be a good one between two NFC teams looking to rebound with new staffs in place.

Eberflus excelled as a defensive coordinator with the Colts and moving on to become a head coach was clearly too big of a jump for him and he often seemed to be in over his head at times when it came to game management decisions. But, as a defensive play-caller, Eberflus has led some strong units, including with the Bears.

Eberflus preaches discipline and detail-oriented play from his defenders, even though his scheme with the Bears was considered static and conservative. The Bears will be returning 11 starters on defense who could look to give the offense some pointers on where to attack his scheme with the Cowboys, unless he adapts to his new personnel.

Despite going 7-10 last season, the Cowboys on paper should be a much stronger team in 2025 saying the roster remains healthy and shouldn't be overlooked. But, the same goes for the Bears with a new coaching staff coming in.
