The Chicago Bears just took an exciting step in what many fans hope will lead to a new stadium in Arlington Heights.
The Chicago Tribune’s Robert McCoppin reports the Bears filed paper work to begin the demolition of Arlington International Racecourse on Wednesday. The Bears purchased the massive 326-acre property last year for a whopping $197 million.
The Bears current plan is to first gut the interior of the grandstand before continuing with any exterior demolition.
According to the report, team officials are making it clear that this development doesn’t mean they will move forward with the $5 billion plan to build a new enclosed stadium with incredible commodities such as housing, bars and restaurants surrounding the venue.
Bears officials say that the demolition had been planned for a while, stating that it has no correlation with the Cook County assessor raising the value of the property.
Though the plan for the new stadium seems to still be in the distant future, it’s exciting that the team has started this important process. It’s more positive news for Bears fans in what has already been a fabulous offseason when factoring in the team’s moves in free agency and its performance in the 2023 NFL Draft.
