After an abysmal performance by the Chicago Bears offensive line in Week 2, head coach Matt Eberflus offered an update on the state of the unit ahead of Wednesday's practice, and it's not one fans will like to hear.
According to Eberflus, the team will not be making a change in regards to who will start up-front in Week 3. Meaning the team will keep the same starters in place.
"We're looking for continuity and consistency and communication and getting better," Eberflus added. "That's what we're focused on. So, I just go back to my original comment, it's fundamentals, it's basics. It's important that we get that down as a group. And so we're going back to that."
The starting group in front of rookie quarterback Caleb Williams allowed Williams to be pressured 36 total times and sacked seven times last Sunday night. Which makes it surprising that no move will be made to the unit.
The position is already down one player after center/guard Ryan Bates was placed on the injured reserve with a shoulder/arm injury ahead of Week 2. The unit will, however, see one change in practice today.
Left guard Teven Jenkins will not be practicing while he deals with a deep thigh bruise. Matt Pryor will replace him during Wednesday's practice, but the injury doesn't appear to be a lengthy issue.
Even though the Bears aren't making any adjustments to the lineup and who's starting up-front, the team took special interest in fixing the issues in pass protection.
"Whenever there's an issue on any side of the ball, I'm always going to go directly to that issue and work on that and put energy, time, attention to that," Eberflus said. "So, that's no different. If it was special teams, if it was offensive or defensive line play, whatever that is, that's my job as the head coach."
Overall, the entire offensive unit is looking to get everything put together, beyond just the level of play on the offensive line.
"We're working, guys are working in fundamentals and and we're figuring out what we do," Eberflus said. "We're going to figure it out. I believe that we got better last week in terms of rhythm, timing, passing, distributing the ball to the skill. Now we're working run game, all the other things that come off of that. And like I said, we're a work in progress and I believe in the coaches and I believe in the players. And the guys are working to get that done."
Bears coaches and players believe they have the answer to the pass protection concerns and the perfect opportunity to fix it
We’ll see if it makes a difference.
