The Chicago Bears suffered another injury setback leading up to kickoff against the New England Patriots that makes things even worse for a critical position group.
On Sunday morning, the team added offensive guard Nate Davis to the Week 10 injury report with a back injury and listed him as out for Sunday's game.
The team already ruled out three offensive tackles on Sunday in Braxton Jones, Darnell Wright, and Kiran Amegadjie. This new development just adds more pressure to the starting-five the team will be rolling with.
Davis started the season at right guard for the Bears over the first two games but was replaced by Matt Pryor in Week 3. In Weeks 6 and 8, Davis was listed as a healthy inactive with the trade deadline creeping up.
However, when the deadline passed on Tuesday, Davis remained on the team as a high-priced depth piece for the offense. Here's what head coach Matt Eberflus had to say about Davis back in October.
"He's been a pro's pro," Eberflus said. "He's done a really good job of staying engaged, working every week, and again, we're going to need all these players, and they know that. They're going to have to step in there and perform like we saw with our defensive backfield. So, it's important everybody stays engaged, stays on it in terms of the details and preparation."
However, with Davis listed as out for Sunday's game against New England, things get even more difficult with how the front five gets assigned. Right now, the most likely option is Larry Borom at left tackle, Teven Jenkins at left guard, Coleman Shelton at center, Ryan Bates at right guard, and Matt Pryor at right tackle.
As for the depth options, the Bears elevated OG/OT Jake Curhan from the practice squad and have C/OG Doug Kramer Jr. on the gameday roster. Last week against the Arizona Cardinals, the Bears moved Curhan to right tackle after Wright went down but this week the team has Bates back, which allows Pryor to slide to right tackle.
The only other offensive lineman on the 53-man roster, guard Bill Murray, was placed on the injured reserve with a pectoral injury suffered in Week 8.
"I've been encouraged with the guys that have been in there," Eberflus added in October. "It's always going to be, 'It's a long season.' It's always going to be, 'Hey, we’re going to slide some different guys in there' during the course of this season."
As for the rest of the inactives, the Bears also ruled out defensive end Darrell Taylor (knee) and linebacker Noah Sewell (knee) with injures. The team did also elevate linebacker Carl Jones from the practice squad on Saturday.
Bears’ lingering issue hits an all-time low heading into crucial game against Patriots
Not good news for QB1.
