Bears signal they’re targeting Nahshon Wright’s replacement with the type of prospects they’ve met with at the NFL Combine
The Chicago Bears clearly have a type at the cornerback position going into the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Chicago Bears are fully on board with overhauling the defensive side of the ball going into the second season under head coach Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator, something that’s been made clear after Johnson and general manager Ryan Poles spoke at the NFL Combine.
The Bears ideally will aim to upgrade the defensive line this offseason while also having glaring needs at the safety and linebacker position. Even cornerback, the team’s strongest defensive position, could see some new faces in 2026.
On Thursday, the cornerback prospects arrived to the podium and a few players mentioned they have already met, or plan to meet, with the Bears in Indy, and they all fit a specific type this staff is obviously looking for.
Bears are showing interest in a specific type of CB prospect at the NFL Combine
Last offseason, the Bears made two additions to the cornerback position by signing Nahshon Wright and drafting Zah Frazier. Both players had exceptional size and length at the position, the main trait defensive backs coach Al Harris looks for in his cornerbacks.
Wright went on to have a Pro Bowl season with the Bears and now is slated to hit free agency with a strong market. Frazier missed the entirety of his rookie season but is expected to be back in the fold in 2026. With Wright potentially set to depart, the Bears are clearly looking for his potential replacement to compete for a starting position on the outside that fits the same specific type.
Here’s the four cornerbacks that noted they’ve met with the Bears at the NFL Combine.
Tacario Davis – Washington
Davis said he will meet with the Bears later in the day but checks the boxes the staff is looking for with his 6-4 height and lanky frame. In coverage, Davis had just three career interceptions in college but had 25 pass deflections, including 15 in one season at Arizona back in 2023 that led the entire conference. He allowed just one touchdown with a 50.6 passer rating allowed in seven games during the 2025 season while being targeted 28 times.
Devin Moore – Florida
Moore already had his formal meeting with the Bears at the NFL Combine and said it was “amazing” to meet with Harris and go over some of his mistakes. He’s got the ideal height at 6-3 and his best trait is playing clean football considering he didn’t get called for a single penalty over the last two seasons. In coverage, he recorded five interceptions and nine pass deflections.
Julian Neal – Arkansas
At 6-2, Neal is shorter than the other two prospects previously mentioned but he still uses his height and length to his advantage in coverage. He recorded four interceptions and 18 pass deflections during his time at Fresno State and Arkansas. Neal noted he would be “ecstatic” to play for the Bears and mentioned how he would “love” to learn under Bears CB Jaylon Johnson.
Charles “Chuck” Demmings – Stephen F. Austin
Demmings is a player I’ve mocked a couple of times to the Bears ahead of the NFL Combine. He’s the shortest of the four at 6-1 but can still use his length to his advantage. At Stephen F. Austin, Demmings played with confidence and totaled nine interceptions and 17 pass deflections.
All four players are in the late Day 2 to early Day 3 range. It’s clear that’s an area of the draft the Bears will consider adding a cornerback and especially one with ideal height, length, and ball skills.
