As expected, the Chicago Bears will be getting an extra preseason game they will have to play prior to the start of the 2024 season.
The NFL announced today that the Bears will be facing off against the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame Game on August 1st to kick off the 2024 preseason in Canton, Ohio. This will be the first time the Bears will play in the game since 2018. As for the Texans, they will be playing in the game for the second time in franchise history.
Both teams will be having franchise legends forever enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 3rd, two days following the game. Return specialist Devin Hester, defensive tackle Steve McMichael, and defensive end Julius Peppers were inducted into the Class of 2024 for the Bears and wide receiver Andre Johnson became the first Texans player in franchise history to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Because the two teams will be starting their preseason a week earlier, and will be playing four preseason games as opposed to three, the Bears and Texans will also begin training camp potentially a week earlier than expected.
Starters traditionally do not play in the Hall of Fame Game meaning we will not be seeing the Bears' new quarterback square off against 2023 second overall pick, and Offensive Rookie of the Year, C.J. Stroud. However, the Texans will be one of the two AFC South teams the Bears are slated to play on the road during the regular season.
The Bears have some good history related to the Hall of Fame Game, although it may just be a pure coincidence. The Bears have made the playoffs in each season that kicked off by playing in the Hall of Fame Game. Chicago reached the wild card round in 1977 and won the division in 1990, 2005 and 2018. Could history repeat itself again?
This is the first major event leading up to the 2024 season that the Bears could be involved in. The Bears are also rumored to be one of the teams in contention to host HBO's Hard Knocks during training camp and playing in the first preseason game could boost that chance of happening for the Bears. Either way, there's going to be even more spotlights on the Bears than usual going into the 2024 season.
