Heading into a pivotal Week 11 divisional game against the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Bears are making a permanent change to the offensive coaching staff.
NFL Media's Tom Pelissero reported that the Bears have fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron amid a three game skid in which the offense scored 27 points.
Bears' passing game coordinator Thomas Brown is expected to take over as the team's primary play-caller and interim offensive coordinator going forward. He will now be the man in charge of turning the offense around and getting rookie first overall pick Caleb Williams back on track.
"After evaluating our entire operation, I decided that it is in the best interest of our team to move in a different direction with the leadership of our offense. This decision was well-thought-out, one that was conducted deliberately and respectfully,” head coach Matt Eberflus said via his official statement. “I would like to thank Shane for his efforts and wish him the best moving forward.”
This was an expected move from the Bears but Eberflus certainly took his time making the decision final. Waldron will no longer be a part of the team's coaching staff, although keeping him in the building was considered.
While speaking with the media on Monday, Eberflus noted that the potential decision that would be made was going to be his decision to make and his alone.
Now, the decision is final and the Bears, at 4-5, will hope that the move can create a spark for the team's offense going forward.
Brown, the former NFL running back and former Carolina Panthers' offensive coordinator, will now get the opportunity to call plays for the second year in a row. Brown served as the Panthers' interim play-caller in 2023. The final eight games will be a big opportunity for the rising coaching candidate to prove himself.
Over the last three games, the Bears' offense has been insanely inefficient, something that continued to get worse with each passing week. On Sunday against the New England Patriots, the unit hit rock bottom after being held to just 3 points while going 1/14 on third down and allowing Williams to be sacked a career-high nine times.
However, there's plenty of reason to believe this unit can find a way to get on a groove once again, because we've already seen it once this season.
"We've played some really good football. We've played complimentary football during the course of the year," Eberflus said on Monday. "We won some games in a row. So there is evidence on tape that we've had togetherness, complimentary football, winning football. And for you to sit there and say that we haven't done that, that's not true. I also understand that we've lost three in a row, and there's an urgency there, and there's an adjustment, changes that are necessary in that process, because it hasn't worked the last three weeks, and I'm fully aware of that too."
Following the Bears' loss on Sunday, Williams was asked about the potential coaching change regarding his offensive play-caller and welcomed any decision that was made.
"I mean, they're not going to reinvent the wheel, in a sense. We're mid season and it's not a decision for me. I have to do what coach says. I have to do with whatever decision he makes," Williams said. "I'm gonna have to be fine with it. Will I be able to adapt? Yes, I will. We will be able to adapt whatever decision he makes, and then, you know, from there, we have to go out there and execute and win games right now."
Overall, this was the right decision to make for the Bears but it's going to be a major knock on Eberflus' ability to find the right guy on offense. Let's see if Brown can be the right man for the job this time around.
The Bears are worried about the wrong thing when it comes to Caleb Williams’ development and Sunday’s loss proved it
It hasn’t looked good so far.
