Bears set to hire hidden gem to coaching staff
The Chicago Bears plan to hire former Tennessee Titans assistant Luke Steckel for a coaching position on the offensive line staff.
The Chicago Bears are preparing to hire Tennessee Titans run game analyst Luke Steckel for a role on the offensive line staff, according to multiple sources.
Steckel spent the last two seasons as Tennessee’s tight ends coach before having his role changed earlier this month. When the Titans promoted Tim Kelly to be their next offensive coordinator, Mike Vrabel moved Steckel into an analytical role. It is unclear if that change was a promotion, demotion, or a lateral move, but it certainly was not the promotion to offensive coordinator that both Todd Downing and Arthur Smith got after serving as Titans' tight ends coach.
Steckel, a Princeton graduate, is now preparing to leave the Titans' organization for a chance to join Matt Eberflus' offensive line staff with the Bears. Steckel and Eberflus previously coached together with the Cleveland Browns from 2009-2010. Luke's uncle, Dave Steckel, was also on the defensive staff with Eberflus at the University of Missouri from 2001-2008.
By all accounts, Steckel is still a rising star in the coaching world and a highly successful position coach. Earlier this offseason, he received an interview from the Los Angeles Chargers for their offensive coordinator opening after helping rookie tight end Chig Okonkwo burst onto the NFL scene with 14 yards per catch in 2022.
Eberflus and the Bears continue to bring in bright minds that will help develop young talent and turn things around from the 3-14 record Chicago had in 2022.
