We can now cross one name off the list of potential head coaching options for the Chicago Bears this offseason.
Bill Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl winning coach from the New England Patriots, has found a new home after landing a 5-year deal with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The decision to move to the college level and not put his name in the running for an NFL head coaching vacancy raised a lot of eyebrows but the decision has been made.
Currently, there are only three open head coaching positions in the NFL; the Bears, the New Orleans Saints, and the New York Jets with multiple more expected to open by the end of the season. Of those candidates Belichick and his former assistants believed the Bears were the most attractive option, according to ESPN's Seth Wickersham.
However, Wickersham added that the crew didn't believe the Bears would consider Belichick for their open head coach position and instead have their sights on another target for the vacant role.
"According to sources with direct knowledge, the group deemed that the Chicago Bears were probably the most attractive job, but that team brass was unlikely to consider Belichick," Wickersham wrote. "The group expects the same thing that most around the league do: that the Bears will go offense, hoping to give quarterback Caleb Williams a chance at a career, probably targeting Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson."
Ben Johnson is easily the top candidate in the coaching cycle and atop the wish list of the majority of Bears' fans. Johnson was a top name the last two cycles but opted both times to return to Detroit as the Lions' offensive coordinator.
A few weeks back, Albert Breer noted Johnson was looking to see if the Bears' head coach position would open last offseason, and obviously it did not. However, it's open now if Johnson wanted to make a run at landing the job, but the Bears won't get him that easily.
The Bears will have to spend big to land the top offensive mind and it's already been made clear some of the things he's looking for in an organization if he leaves Detroit.
As for the other options, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is another trending name that's been linked to the Bears' head coaching search but don't rule out some wildcards such as Aaron Glenn and Marcus Freeman as well.
Bears are considered a ‘fascinating’ candidate to land former NFL Coach of the Year in 2025
He would be quite an interesting candidate.
