The Chicago Bears have a major decision on their hands regarding the most important position in football that seemingly has everyone torn.
The Bears front office will soon have to choose between retaining Justin Fields as their starting quarterback or moving on from Fields in favor of a rookie quarterback that will be selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Everyone has been voicing their own opinions on the matter this off-season but perhaps the most prominent voice in Bears history has finally shared his thoughts.
While appearing on an interview with The 33rd Team's Ari Meirov, Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Bears legendary linebacker Brian Urlacher was asked about his thoughts on Fields' future in Chicago and he didn't hold back.
"I don't envy their position. They have to make a tough decision with Justin, who could be the guy and may not be the guy," Urlacher explained. "Last year they had the number one pick and they passed up on C.J. Stroud, they could have had him last year. It's tough to be in that position."
"I think at this point, if people are still asking if Justin Fields is the guy, then he's probably not the guy. Three years in, if they're still saying 'hey is he going to be our guy' and they're sitting there with the number one pick with a pretty good player sitting there, I think they probably have to draft a kid."
It's a harsh statement to hear from an all-time great in Chicago but he does have some truth to what he said. Through three seasons in Chicago, Fields still hasn’t done enough to prove he can 100 percent be the guy moving forward as the team's starter no matter how many people come to his support.
Fields is still young and has shown flashes of being able to utilize his immense talent but the situation is what it is. If Fields was on any other team right now, the decision would be an easy one to make and you bring him back as the starter. However, the Bears front office will be on thin ice if they move out of the first overall pick in the draft and pass on a top quarterback prospect for the second consecutive year.
The writing is on the wall for the Bears to move on from Fields no matter how unfortunate it seems to the rest of the roster and the fanbase. Having the first overall pick and the opportunity to land a potentially generational prospect in Caleb Williams is too good for the Bears to pass up.
The good news is, plenty of teams will be in the quarterback market this off-season meaning the Bears will have multiple suitors willing to trade significant draft capital to acquire him before the draft. We'll see if that is indeed the decision the Bears decide to roll with in the coming weeks.
