The Chicago Bears had a haunting two game trend that showed up on Wednesday’s to remind the team of what happened the Sunday before, but in Week 3 the Bears flipped that trend on it’s head.

We are of course talking about the NFC Offensive Player of the Week Award. During the first two weeks of the season, that awarded was handed out to two different quarterbacks that went up against the Bears’ defense in Minnesota Vikings’ J.J. McCarthy and Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff.

The winner in Week 3 was not Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott after facing the Bears’ defense, it was in fact Bears’ quarterback Caleb Williams.

Caleb Williams named NFC Offensive Player of the Week

It was a well earned honor for the Bears’ young quarterback, who turned in arguably his best performance at Soldier Field since being drafted first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Bears NFC Offensive Player of the Week Facts

  • This is the first time Caleb Williams has been rewarded with his award in his career.
  • Last Bears player to win the award was DJ Moore after Week 5 of the 2023 season.
  • Last Bears QB to win the award was Justin Fields after Week 9 of the 2022 season.

Williams completed 67.9 percent of his passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns with no turnovers while adding 12 yards on the ground, leading the offense to a 31-point explosion. It’s the exact kind of game we were hoping to see out of Williams sooner than later in this offense and it was a sign of everything coming together for Williams fundamentally.

“Just being able to get comfortable with my footwork, that [was] my focus from Week 1 to Week 2, and I think why some of those passes from Week 1 to Week 2 looked a little different,” Williams said. “I mean, [footwork] is up there with the top list of things to be able to be accurate, and that’s huge for me. From there, I think I have all the talent in the world to be able to deliver a good ball to my guys and let them go and make plays for us as an offense.”

That growth Williams has showed in Ben Johnson’s offense on a week-to-week basis is arguably more impressive than the one game performance he had in Week 3.

“He’s got a good system in place right now that he’s adhering to and it’s showing up on gameday where we’re starting to reap some of the awards from that,” Johnson explained.

Williams beat out former Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery for the award. Montgomery powered the Detroit Lions to a big in on Monday Night Football with 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns but it wasn’t enough to earn the award over Williams’ performance. The best part of all this, Williams has already turned the page to Week 4.

“I tried to recognize him in front of the group and he wasn’t having it,” Johnson said on Wednesday. “Very stoic. He’s already on to the next game.”
