The Chicago Bears will soon be forced to make a franchise altering decision at the most important position in football in the coming months.

Armed with the current first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft with two games left to be played in 2023, the Bears have the option to select their next franchise quarterback with the top pick in the draft.

However, the Bears will have to choose between a potential top quarterback in the class or their current starter, Justin Fields. Fields has been given the last few weeks of the season as a tryout period to prove he can be the Bears franchise quarterback.

The outcome over the past month has seemed promising in Chicago for the entire team as a whole. The Bears have won three of their last four games and collectively are playing like a more cohesive team.

Fields has won four games as a starter in a season for the first time in his career. While the 4-7 record isn’t all that impressive, the majority of his numbers have improved drastically.

Fields has thrown for a career-high 195.1 passing yards with a 15-9 touchdown-interception ratio in 2023. Fields has also rushed for over 500 yards for the second consecutive season.

However, the question still remains going into Week 17, has Fields done enough to remain the starter in Chicago? The Bears opted to trade the number one overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to further build around Fields and the patience of the front office might have worn off after this season.

If the Bears elect to move on from their current starter, the presumed replacement would be USC's Caleb Williams, who is widely considered the top quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft class.

On Christmas morning, Williams weighed in on the Bears future plans by liking this interesting tweet below.

Could Williams simply be sharing support for the Bears current starter or possibly hinting toward wanting to play elsewhere in the NFL? Personally, it seems as though Williams is sharing support for Fields and his future in Chicago.

The tweet also brings up another interesting point. If the Bears decide to keep Fields as the starter, what then becomes of the first overall pick in the NFL draft? The Bears of course could opt to trade back for a second consecutive season allowing another team to select a top quarterback or they could make things interesting.

As the tweet suggests, the Bears could potentially select Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. with their top pick. If the Bears were to select Harrison Jr. first overall, he would be the first wide receiver taken with the number one overall pick since the New York Jets drafted Keyshawn Johnson in 1996.

All options are still on the table for Chicago and it was intriguing to see Williams seemingly share his opinion on the matter early Christmas morning.
