The Chicago Bears are leaving no stone left unturned in their search for their next offensive coordinator to add to head coach Matt Eberflus' staff.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Bears requested to interview Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator Kellen Moore for the same role, but their request was blocked by the Chargers.
Given that the move would be a lateral maneuver in the same role, the Chargers have the ability to block any offensive coordinator request made by another team. Moore is a hot name in the coaching cycle and even interviewed for the Chargers vacant head coach position last week.
Just requesting to interview Moore in the first place shows that the Bears are not playing any games when it comes to their offensive coordinator search. The team has already reportedly shown interest in or already officially interviewed nine different candidates prior to reaching out to the Chargers.
Moore joined the Chargers during the 2023 season under head coach Brandon Staley's coaching staff. The Chargers finished the season with a 5-12 record that ended with quarterback Justin Herbert missing the final four games due to injury.
Staley was fired by the Chargers following the team's Week 15 blowout loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. With the season now at a close, the Chargers have begun their search for their next head coach, Moore being listed among the potential candidates for the job.
Moore began his coaching career with the Dallas Cowboys as the team's quarterbacks coach and took over as offensive coordinator in 2019. He remained in that role through the 2022 season. In that span, the Cowboys' offense ranked second in the NFL in points per game and total yards per game.
Despite being denied by the Chargers, the Bears are not fully out of the hunt if they want to continue pursuing Moore. Depending on who the Chargers hire as their next head coach, Moore may or may not remain on the team's coaching staff.
Most teams involved in a coaching search allow other assistants to pursue other opportunities with other teams, perhaps the Chargers decision to block the Bears' request is a sign toward how they feel about him returning in 2024. Whatever the case may be, you can't fault the Bears for attempting to swing big.
