The Chicago Bears didn't have a very exciting offseason — rebuilds typically aren't exhilarating — but they may have gotten one of the biggest steals of the year with one of their undrafted free agent signings.
Defensive tackle Micah Dew-Treadway has had a solid training camp. Dew-Treadway is a massive 25-year-old rookie who played seven years of college football (split between Notre Dame and Minnesota).
The Chicago native was recently pointed out by The Athletic as a player that's "bought-in" to Matt Eberflus' HIITS system.
Defensive tackle Micah Dew-Treadway. I thought heading into camp it’d be wide receiver Kevin Shaa, and he did have one noteworthy catch in camp, but the lack of a passing game made it difficult for the likes of Shaa or tight ends Chase Allen and Jake Tonges to stand out in a camp setting. Dew-Treadway, though, seemed to really buy into the “HITS” principle. The Bolingbrook, Illinois, native had a sack against the Chiefs and showed a high motor in the interior.
Dew-Treadway was listed as a backup on the Bears' first depth chart, which is an impressive feat for an undrafted free agent. Typically, those players are long shots to make the 53-man roster. But it sounds like Dew-Treadway has already worked himself into a key role.
I don't know how much of an impact Dew-Treadway will have for the Bears this season, though he should have plenty of opportunities. The biggest thing for Chicago is that it appears Dew-Treadway could be a key part of the Bears' rebuild under Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles.
