The Chicago Bears could be losing a key member of the franchise this offseason.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Friday morning that Bears linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi is set to interview for Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator job.
Arizona recently hired Jonathan Gannon as their new head coach. Gannon was previously the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.
There's an obvious connection between Borgonzi and Gannon — the two coaches worked together for three years with the Indianapolis Colts. Borgonzi was the Colts' linebackers coach from 2018 to 2021. Gannon, meanwhile, was the Colts' defensive backs coach from 2018 to 2020.
While Borgonzi has a history with Gannon, his history with Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is more extensive.
Borgonzi and Gannon both worked under Eberflus in Indy (when Eberflus was the Colts' defensive coordinator).
Borgonzi also worked with Eberflus for three years when both were on the Dallas Cowboys staff.
Losing assistants is never ideal. Continuity isn't a sexy word in the NFL, but it's incredibly important to a team's success. Borgonzi is a guy that Eberflus knows extremely well and trusts. And considering the Bears are building their identity around being a tough defensive team, the last thing they want is to lose a coach that shares that vision.
But these moves are inevitable. When you have good coaches, they're going to get poached. That's just part of life in the NFL.
