The Chicago Bears' loss to the New York Jets got even worse on Sunday evening.
According to a report from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney likely needs season-ending surgery to repair torn ligaments in his ankle.
Mooney suffered the injury in Chicago's 31-10 loss to New York on Sunday.
If surgery ends up being the case for Mooney — and it certainly appears that will be the case — it's a brutal end to the young wide receiver's season.
The Bears weren't going to make the playoffs this season, and there's a chance that quarterback Justin Fields will miss next week's game ahead of Chicago's bye week, but the hope was still to see Mooney and Fields finish the season strong and continue to build solid chemistry.
Instead, Mooney will likely see his season end prematurely and he'll start his road to recovery.
The former Tulane standout should be good to go for training camp next summer, but it's definitely possible that he could miss some OTAs next spring depending on the recovery time if he undergoes surgery.
