While the Chicago Bears season is still young, the front office is leaving behind bread crumbs. Bread crumbs indicating they could be looking towards 2023.

Primarily by way of the most important position: quarterback.

It would be an interesting and highly controversial move. Justin Fields is only in his second season, and the front office has yet to supply him with adequate blocking across the front or weapons to elevate his passing game. Though a proposed move for an upgrade at wide receiver could be exactly what he needs.

While the front office isn't outwardly saying this, their scouts are out in numbers. Frequently attending high value college football matchups. Featuring some of the best QB talent in the country.

The QBs in question, in these examples alone are Bryce Young (Alabama), Brennan Armstrong (Virginia) and Will Levis (Kentucky).

Whether or not they would be an upgrade is subjective to first-year Bears general manager Ryan Poles and first-year head coach Matt Eberflus. As well as the scouting department.

Despite Fields maybe not getting as a fair chance to be a franchise QB, the Bears are in the midst of their rebuild. Typically, when there's a new GM and HC, they'll want their own players and personnel.

If Fields doesn't improve on where he is currently, his time in Chicago might be short.

Through four games, he is 2-2 on the season as the starter. He is completing 50.7% of his passes for two passing touchdowns and six interceptions with a 26.2 QBR. All among the worst in the league.

He is fairing much better as a runner, however. With 147 yards rushing (4.3 yards per carry) and a touchdown. Currently third on the Chicago Bears in all rushing categories.

It would be a surprise to move on from one of the most talented QB prospects the Bears have ever had in the building. Despite his shortcomings, he still has plenty of upside.

Should the front office dedicate their resources to improving Fields, it will buy him one more year.

However, with the shelf life of both a GM and HC about three years to make an impact, it shouldn't surprise anyone if they decide to take it in another direction.
