Chicago Bears linebacker Roquan Smith dropped a bombshell on Tuesday as he publicly requested a trade.

Smith cited contract negotiations as the reason he's requesting a trade.

“Unfortunately, the new front office regime doesn’t value me here,” wrote Smith. “They’ve refused to negotiate in good faith, everything step of this journey has been ‘take it or leave it’. The deal sent to me is one that would be for myself, and the entire LB market if I signed it.”

Just because Smith requested a trade doesn't mean a trade will happen.

In fact, former Bears director of college scouting Greg Gabriel thinks things will eventually work out between Smith and Chicago.

Gabriel tweeted on Tuesday that Bears fans should "relax" and indicated that Smith asking for a trade is "part of the process".

Chicago fans better hope Gabriel is right. Smith is a player the Bears absolutely need to keep in town. He's a key team leader and he's a player the defense can be built around. Trading him would be a disaster. And it might be something that general manager Ryan Poles never recovers from.
