On Monday, it was reported that the Chicago Bears sent in a request to interview current Dallas Cowboys' head coach Mike McCarthy for their vacant head coaching position.
It's been rumored for weeks that the Bears were interested in speaking with the former Super Bowl winning head coach and that McCarthy could share similar interests.
However, those potential talks hit a slight speed bump on Tuesday. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Cowboys have blocked the Bears' request to interview their current head coach, over 24 hours after the request was submitted by the Bears, but that doesn't fully rule Chicago out as of now.
The Cowboys still have exclusive negotiating rights with McCarthy until January 14th, when his contract and the contracts of many of his assistants expires with the team. That means starting on January 15th, McCarthy is free to speak with any team he wishes, unless the two sides reach a new agreement with his contract.
Surely by blocking the request the two sides are bound to figure something out, if not, this is a terrible look for the Cowboys' organization. McCarthy has previously stated that he would absolutely love to return to Dallas if offered an extension.
However, Jerry Jones continues to be non-committal and quite frankly cryptic about how he feels about McCarthy and his future in Dallas. If Jones opts to move on next week, multiple teams including the Bears will be lining up to interview McCarthy.
As a potential candidate, McCarthy fits all the traits the Bears are looking for in the head coaching search. His players love him, he brings a winning-mentality to the organization, and he has history developing young quarterbacks into stars. What's not to like about the possibility?
It would also be great to see McCarthy return to the NFC North and face off against the team he won a Super Bowl with twice a year as the coach of their bitter rival. The ball is still ultimately in Jerry Jones' court to see what he wants to do with his coach.
Luckily, McCarthy isn't the only experienced Super Bowl winning coach on the Bears' radar. Soon after the Cowboys blocked the Bears' request, ESPN's Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler reported that the Bears are planning to interview Seattle Seahawks' head coach Pete Carroll on Thursday, a meeting that can't be blocked by anyone.
