NFC rival might have just handed the Bears the ideal playoff mercenary to bolster the defense and he already has an in-house connection
The Bears need to pounce on CB Trevon Diggs following his release from the Cowboys.
The Chicago Bears have their eyes set to the regular season finale against the Detroit Lions before turning the page to the playoffs, but the team is coming off the worst showing of the year on defense.
It was a pathetic performance in Week 17 against the San Francisco 49ers, and while the 49ers have a red-hot offense, it’s the same kind of offense the Bears should expect to face in the playoffs if the team wants to contend in the Super Bowl. Chicago proved in that game the defense probably won’t able to hang with that kind of firepower and there’s little that can change that now.
Except for one possibility that just became a viable option thanks to an NFC rival.
Cowboys waive CB Trevon Diggs ahead of Week 18, and the Bears should be interested
On Tuesday, it was reported that the Dallas Cowboys planned to waive All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs, a stunning move before the team’s final game of the season that now gives Diggs the opportunity to land with a playoff contender to finish out the season.
The Bears should be the first team with a hand up. Chicago just allowed 303 passing yards and three passing touchdowns last Sunday and while the unit has done great with the turnovers, big plays have been a major concern for the secondary.
Diggs is a player that has familiarity with the scheme and has an in-house connection with defensive backs coach Al Harris, and he’s also a player head coach Ben Johnson named dropped last week when praising the impact Harris has brought to Chicago coming from Dallas.
“He’s done a phenomenal job,” Johnson said of Harris during his sit down interview with Tony Dungy ahead of SNF. “He’s made a huge impact on our players, he’s made a huge impact on our defense, and our team. Everywhere he’s been, his DBs have been ballhawks. In Dallas, for a number of years, it was Diggs and it was [DaRon] Bland, they’re coming away with interceptions. Well, that’s carried over here.”
The two standouts in that department for Chicago have been safety Kevin Byard (who leads the NFL in interceptions) and Nahshon Wright, a player Diggs to play alongside in Dallas under Harris. So, there’s a lot of familiarity with the Bears. But, what actually led to this move from the Cowboys?
What went wrong in Dallas for Trevon Diggs in 2025?
The 2025 season can be described best as weird when it comes to the relationship between Diggs and the Cowboys, which obviously led to this decision. To learn more about how things soured to this breaking point, I spoke with A to Z Sports Dallas writer Mauricio Rodriguez.
“Trevon Diggs’ time with the Dallas Cowboys was always going to end at the end of the 2025 NFL season. The writing was on the wall after a decline in play and multiple instances of friction with the front office, including the enforcement of a $500,000 salary de-escalator after Diggs rehabbed away from team facilities during the offseason. For Diggs, flashes of talent are still there and he could be worth a shot for a playoff defense willing to play a lot of man coverage. However, multiple knee injuries have taken their toll and it’s clear Diggs is far from being the player he once was.
“Diggs struggled to adapt to Matt Eberflus’ zone-heavy scheme in Dallas, and even he admitted to making mistakes in Cover 2 looks. Communication was an issue for him all year long, though in his defense, it has been for the entire Cowboys defense. For the price the Cowboys signed him to, he’s not worth it. But, I would fully expect him to clear waivers and sign for a minimum deal with a team willing to take a flyer on him.” – Rodriguez
To me, it should be a no-brainer. Take the flyer on Diggs, see how quick he can pick up the system, and then hope he can bring some kind of juice during the postseason. You only got one shot at this run, you gotta make sure no stone is left unturned if you want to win it all.

Too bad the Bears managed to beat themselves first on that play.
