The Chicago Bears have five games remaining in the 2023 season and the final few weeks of the season will serve as a tryout period for two prominent members of the Bears locker room.
Starting quarterback Justin Fields' future in Chicago is currently uncertain and his play over the final weeks will determine whether or not he will remain as the team's starter going into next season. The same can be said for head coach Matt Eberflus, although he has a much shorter leash.
Multiple names have already surfaced for who could replace Eberflus as the Bears next head coach including former Bears quarterback Jim Harbaugh and Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. A new name has joined the growing list on Tuesday.
NFL insider Josina Anderson reported on Tuesday morning that Washington Commanders assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy could be on the Bears radar in terms of a potential head coaching search.
Anderson also added that Eberflus' exit as the Bears head coach hasn't fully been decided stating that his position will be "under evaluation with the team at 4-8."
Bieniemy joined the Commanders coaching staff in 2023 after serving as the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2018-2022. Bieniemy worked alongside the offense led by Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The three went on to win two Super Bowls while continuing to set offensive milestones year after year. Mahomes won two league MVP awards and was named as a Pro Bowler in each season under Bieniemy.
Bieniemy joined the Commanders this season to have a fresh start of his own, away from Reid and Mahomes, in order to become a team's primary offensive play-caller.
Throughout the first 13 weeks of the season, Bieniemy's new quarterback Sam Howell ranks second in the NFL with 3,466 passing yards. The Commanders have scored 30+ points in three separate occasions in 2023, after only accomplishing the feat once during the entire 2022 season.
Bieniemy seems like the ideal offensive candidate to become a head coach in the NFL. The Chiefs' offense has taken a major step back in 2023 without Bieniemy on the staff. The drop in production was even noticed by a former Chiefs standout who blames the dip on Bieniemy's absence while praising his former coordinator.
"A lot of people probably won't say it, Kansas City has a lot of great players on that team, but EB has a certain standard," Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill said on his It Needed to be Said podcast. "He'll never let you get comfortable, no matter how great you think you are. … I miss the way he used to push me."
Bieniemy would be a great leader and mind for a young quarterback, whether that's Fields or a potential new rookie selected with the team's top draft choice. Whatever the case may be, the Bears are casting quite a solid net in terms of finding a new head coach.
