ESPN analyst Field Yates made a prediction for the Chicago Bears this week that would mean a long-time player not returning in 2023.
Yates revealed that he doesn't believe running back David Montgomery, who has spent the first four years of his career in Chicago, will return next season.
Montgomery will be a free agent this spring as his rookie contract expires in March.
Will they re-sign running back David Montgomery? No. This one is tricky, as Montgomery is so respected by the organization and the Bears have more cap space than any other team. But with Khalil Herbert and Trestan Ebner on the depth chart, Chicago might decide to allocate the resources elsewhere — like receiver, offensive line or cornerback.

I tend to agree with Yates.
Montgomery has been a solid player for the Bears, but he isn't playing at a superstar level. And with running backs, they need to be a superstar (a la Derrick Henry or Christian McCaffrey) to earn a big free-agent deal (and even then it might not be a wise move).
If Montgomery wants to come back on a cheap deal, then maybe the Bears consider it. But Chicago, which is going through a rebuild, has plenty of other needs they need to address before worrying about the running back position.
And any money that could be potentially given to Montgomery would likely be better spent on those other needs (like the offensive line or wide receivers).
We've likely seen the last of Montgomery in a Bears uniform.
